After suffering a shock 19 point loss earlier in the year, the Sydney Swans look for revenge over the Carlton Blues at home this week and further strengthen their recent dominance over the Blues having won ten of the last 12 matches.
It was a tinge of sadness for Swans fans with last week’s loss triggering an end to the teams prospects of a 2019 finals campaign. But with the club having enjoyed some decent periods of football in recent times (5-3 record since early May), missing the finals for just the second time in the last decade is not all bad news.
Considering youngsters such as Issac Heeney, Jake Lloyd, George Hewett, James Rowbottom, Zak Jones and Harry Cunningham have been instrumental in the club’s mid season turnaround, it offers hope that the club can quickly rebound in 2020.
In the last four weeks the Blues have enjoyed two wins, two defeats by less than a goal and have moved off the bottom of the ladder, not a bad way for interim coach David Teague to impress those above him that he is the right man to lead the club forward long term.
What makes the Blues’ performance (especially over the last two rounds) even more remarkable is that their clear best player – Patrick Cripps has been out injured. With Cripps expected back this week, the key will be if those players who stepped up their game during his absence now drop off again.
Players to watch: In the corresponding game earlier this year, Callum Sinclair (SWA) had 16 disposals, 40 hit-outs and one goal to clearly win the ruck contest.
But Carlton had Matthew Kreuzer missing that match due to injury. With Kreuzer back 100% healthy,
Sinclair won’t get it all his way own this week.
Stat Attack: Only once in the last 12 H2H contests has the winning margin for either team been less than 15.5 points.
Despite 12 losses this season, Carlton have covered the ‘points line’ in nine games.
Sydney have won their last three at the SCG by an average margin of 35 points.
After going 56 weeks without scoring 100 points, Carlton have now achieved that feat in three of their last 11 games.
