The Fremantle Dockers look to overcome their dreadful University of Tasmania Stadium record (1-10) when they take on the Hawthorn Hawks, a club that relishes visits to Tasmania having won 49 of 63 games (including one draw).
Relief would be the best way to describe the Hawks victory last week, a win that ended their four match losing streak and now provides the opportunity to notch up their first back-to-back wins of the season.
Although the club will miss the finals this season for just the second time in the past 11 years, coach Alistair Clarkson must still be thrilled with the club’s defensive numbers, ranked first in the competition for tackles – 66.4 per game. Considering the Dockers are ranked last (57.1), it offers an obvious avenue for success this week.
Three losses, followed by three wins followed by three losses, that has been the story of the Dockers in the last two and a half months, dropping from a position inside the top four to currently 11th.
With Aaron Sandilands not expected to line up, the Dockers once again will go into a match with just two players over 192cms. As such any chance they have of a win will focus moving the ball with speed. The more congestion and kicking to packs, the less chance they have of victory.
Players to watch: In just his second year of footy, Andy Brayshaw (DOC) is again having a solid year averaging 16 disposals a game. One negative would be on the scoreboard having kicked just three goals.
James Worpel is starting to carve a niche for himself in the Hawks’ midfield ranked third at the club for disposals. One downside to his game is that he ranked ninth in the league for clangers with 18.5% of his disposals being turnovers.
Stat Attack: Not since 2014 has a Fremantle player kicked more than three goals against the Hawks.
Hawthorn have covered the ‘points line’ just four times this year, the equal lowest of any club.
Fremantle have not kicked above 85 points at UTAS Stadium since 2005.
Hawthorn are 3-1 starting the game as the home favourite in 2019.
